999 What’s Your Emergency:
Series 1

Channel 4, 2012

Another mainstay of Channel 4 docs, ‘999 What’s Your Emergency’ has had 14 series to date. In season one, for the first time in British docs, we sought to simultaneously follow all three emergency services in one town - Blackpool. Up to 10 shooting teams worked together to capture the side of Blackpool few tourists or even locals ever see. Surprisingly frank and funny interviews with the police and their regulars gave the series a gritty realness that connected with the public.

I was the first director brought onboard in the development stage and spent three months setting up the series before we secured the commission. I was a director on the shoot and I edit produced episode 4, ‘Pay Day & Bonfire Night.’

* Series one was my first UK broadcast directing credit. Since then I have continued my relationship with Blast! Films working on a number of other projects. In-between films, I have returned to conduct hundreds of master interviews on 999 series 4-8, 9-11 and 13-14.

'An awful, brilliant series, where even the fly on the wall might wonder if the place is too toxic to stay'
